Responsibilities for Investment Accountant:

  • Initially, perform monthly and quarterly closing processes, which includes:
    • Preparing and posting journal entries for both investment and insurance activities.
  • Following that, prepare general ledger account reconciliations and par value reconciliations.
  • Simultaneously, act as the primary liaison to investment management teams, custodians, and investment software vendors.
  • In addition, handle back-office duties for the trading desk. This involves:
    • Communicating actively with multiple brokers and state banks.
  • Next, create monthly financial reports focusing on investment holdings.
  • Subsequently, prepare schedules and exhibits for quarterly and annual statutory statements. This includes, but is not limited to, IMR/AVR, Schedule D, BA, and DB.
  • Also, assist in the preparation of audited statutory financial statements and footnotes.
  • Moreover, support other regulatory reporting requirements like MD&A, Risk Based Capital, AmBest, and SRQ filing.
  • Meanwhile, respond promptly to requests from external auditors, external rating agencies, and regulatory bodies.
  • Additionally, prepare or assist in preparing State pages, State premium tax returns, and other State regulatory filings, if required.
  • Lastly, identify and recommend continuous process improvements for optimization.

Skills and Experience Requirements for Investment Accountant:

  • Firstly, possess a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or have equivalent experience.
  • Ideally, have 3-5 years of investment accounting experience, particularly in the insurance industry. Life insurance experience is highly desirable.
  • Essentially, be experienced in preparing account reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end financial closings.
  • Importantly, have experience working in a highly regulated industry environment.
  • Preferably, be a primary user of investment accounting/reporting software, with iWorks software experience being highly desirable.
  • Moreover, possess a strong understanding of investment securities including Bonds, Stocks, Structured Securities (CMB, ABS, CMBS, etc.), Options, Private Placements, Swaps, etc.
  • Also, have a good understanding of statutory accounting principles and statutory financial statement filings.
  • Furthermore, demonstrate strong organizational and referencing skills in relation to work papers, financial statements, and schedules prepared.
  • Additionally, have excellent personal computer skills, specifically in MS Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook. Excel proficiency is a plus.
  • Optionally, have knowledge of General Ledger Systems and Regulatory Filing Systems, or other insurance-specific financial application experience.
  • Finally, possess strong analytical abilities and communication skills. Experience with SRQ and AmBest preparation is a plus but not required.
