Our Client is an insurance holding company. Our Client operates three life insurance companies. It offers a wide variety of Whole Life, Final Expense, and Term Life as well as Fixed Annuity Products. Our Client is a highly-rated AM Best insurance organization.

Role Overview

The Senior Underwriter reports directly to Executive Management and the Chief Underwriter. This role involves evaluating life insurance applications to determine whether to approve, decline, or request additional information for both domestic and international lines of business. The Senior Underwriter has the authority to issue or decline cases within their established authority limits.

The Candidate should also be wanting and willing to learn underwriting our Client's international business. This would include operations and the ability to then move up within the organization.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

• Analyze applications by evaluating medical, financial, and other standard factors to assess risk in line with company guidelines and standards.
• Provide professional, timely, and courteous communication to clients and cross-departmental staff to resolve issues affecting policyholders and producers.
• Collaborate with company employees, Third-Party Administrators, and marketing groups to ensure clarity regarding underwriting procedures and insurance policies.
• Adhere to underwriting procedures and guidelines while maintaining strong relationships with producers.
• Utilize and interpret underwriting manuals effectively.
• Review and interpret Medical Information Bureau (MIB) codes, ensuring accurate reporting of these codes.
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA requirements for applicants and support HIPAA audits when necessary.
• Assist in the creation and maintenance of underwriting guidelines to reflect industry best practices.
• Refer cases to reinsurers when they exceed the automatic treaty limit.
• Recommend improvements to Executive Management, such as strategies to enhance efficiency and processes.
• Support the Chief Underwriter with tasks related to premiums, accounting, policy services, and claims for international business.
• Take ownership of team projects and contribute to strategic initiatives.
• Stay updated with changes in industry regulations and underwriting best practices.
• Handle appeals and disputes related to underwriting decisions professionally and effectively.
• Review contestable claims for misrepresentation to ensure accurate processing.

Qualifications:

• A four-year college degree in business, health-related science, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Bilingual abilities in Spanish and English (preferred but not required).
• A minimum of 5 years' experience in life insurance underwriting with a strong understanding of medical and financial aspects.
• Professional certifications such as Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU), or Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI).
• In-depth knowledge of underwriting philosophy and guidelines.
• Experience with back-office life insurance operations (preferred but not required).
• Strong ability to work independently with minimal supervision while providing excellent customer service.
• Familiarity with underwriting software and tools.
• EKG certification.
• Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Proven ability to build and maintain relationships internally and externally.
